Building a budget pc (what do you think?)

Postby Cibi » Nov 6th, '11, 23:51

So i'm almost always using my MacBook Pro 17" (mid 2010) and its wonderfull
Really, its awesome. But i kinda missed having a PC and messing arround with the hardware and stuff (overclocking).

I have a Dell Inspiron 531 desktop but its really old and i thought i'd build a computer that i would just use for overclocking, folding@home (if you dont know what it is => google), some gaming and some designing.

At first i was going to wait till after newyear, for financial reasons but today i found the bargain of a life-time.

An MSI 460 GTX 1GB GDDR5 graphics card for 124€, it was priced at 150€ untill yesterday when there was a pricedrop becaus this was the last one they had and its of the previous series.
(the 460 GTX is a legendary card of the previous NVIDIA GeForce series, it was the cheapest of there high-end cards of that series and its great price/performance)
Since almost all 460 GTX cards are priced at arround 150€ which is already a bargain and this one (a factory OverClocked version) was only 124€ i just had to buy it.

But this meant that i would have to buy a new Power Supply also, caus i will be able to use this card in my Dell but the standard power supply doesnt provide enough power.
I did some research and found that the XFX PRO 550W Core Edition is actually a rebranded Seasonic (seasonic is legendary for their quality) and althou 550W isnt that much, its more then enough for the single GPU setup that i have planned.
So i bought that PSU for 60€

Anyday now i should be getting a motherboard from a friend in the US that he gave to me for free. He customized the motherboard himself to allow higher overclocking by adding copper heatsinks to the MOSFETS.
So that means i'll have an Gigabyte 770T-USB3 motherboard for 15€ (shipping cost)

Then i'll buy the cheapest AMD Black Edition processor (4 or 6 cores, dont know yet) becaus they are the same as the more expensive models that come factory overclock, so by overclocking i'll get better performance then the most expensive stock one.
This will cost me 100€ (for the quad core) or 150€ (for the 6 core)

Then i'll buy 8 GB of G.Skill DDR3 1600MHz memory for 50€

And a new case, fans and some watercooling gear will cost me another 100€

So in conclusion for 450€ (or 500€ for the 6 core) i'll have a pretty decent computer.

What do you guys think?

I would reccomend a higher power PSU.
Also measure your tower, the new cards are like pavement slabs, no good having a card if it doesnt fit.

Apart from that it sounds ok.

Nah, did some more research on the PSU, 550W is plenty for a single GPU system, also those XFX ones actually give 550W, my psu delivers more power then a 600W Corsair one.

And already bought a new case everything fits fine...
